Makeekheh

S: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5 (ESV)

“What blessing comes to you when gentleness lives in you! For you will inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5 (TPT)

“You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought. Matthew 5:5 (MSG)

O: Meek – (adj.) quiet, gentle, and easily imposed on; submissive. But the notes in my Bible, The Passion Translation (TPT), say, “Jesus is saying that when you claim nothing as yours, everything will be given to you. The Aramaic word, makeekheh, implies being both gentle and flexible.

A: Sometimes I picture the people of the Bible in a very different light than I see myself – often thinking, “Well, that was way back then, and it’s so different than what we have now.” But was it really?  Because when I strip all those things away – the differences in culture, the times, the language, the clothing and houses, the transportation, the entertainment… – the heart of the matter is still the same.

Discontentment.

That’s the issue of the heart You are addressing here. Discontentment that often stems from a root of desiring control. Control over my life – how I think things should go, not just for me, but for those around me, too. Being rigid and stiff.

But You, Jesus, You say peace comes to those who are both gentle and flexible. So how do I get there? I guess by letting go of those things I want to control – even if it’s little by little, I know You will wait for me – guiding me until I’m ready – always reassuring me that I can trust You.

It’s when I let go of my control (my desire for control), I find Your peace. And that kind of peace is priceless. That kind of peace allows me to be more present in the moment – to roll with the punches, and get back up again – knowing, trusting, believing that You are in control. And when You are in control – I don’t have to be.

P: Jesus, I love You. I’m so grateful for Your direction. I’m so thankful that You are in control. Thank You, Holy Spirit, for helping me understand Your ways and Your instruction. Please help me to apply Your ways to my life.
